We are very pleased to announce the official collaboration between the IGA and the Project “Geothermal Heat Utilization for Industrial Processes in the SICA member countries”, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The collaboration mainly aims at examining and strengthening geothermal direct use activities in the eight member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA). The joint activities in the next three years will focus on the establishment of a strong regional network, knowledge transfer and capacity building. Last but not least the implementation of demonstrative projects is the main focal point and helps significantly to bring new, efficient and innovative technologies to Central American industries and agriculture companies.
IGA Executive Director Marit Brommer upon signing the MoU with GIZ:
“On behalf of the IGA I am very pleased and excited signing the MoU between IGA and the GIZ-Project. We are embarking on the next steps for future collaboration in the Central American Region to drive geothermal entrepreneurship, create growth and plan for action on the ground. The network and intrinsic knowledge of the IGA combined with the geothermal development project of the GIZ and partners is the recipe for success, and we are looking forward making a difference for the local communities, businesses and our members.”
GIZ Project Manager Ana Lucia Alfaro said:

We are happy to embark on this journey together with strong partners, supporting and helping each other in our mission to contribute to the carbon free future and mitigate the climate change by highlighting the benefits of the geothermal energy source and direct uses.
Ever since the World Geothermal Congress 2020 was postponed last spring, the WGC Organising Committee has been working hard planning a congress in May 2021. However, it has become clear that May this year is not possible either.
In light of this, the Organising Committee has adapted WGC to the new situation we are all facing, while still guaranteeing that WGC 2020 will be an outstanding world class event, where Iceland’s knowledge and experience in harnessing geothermal will be at the forefront.
The outcome is World Geothermal Congress 2020+1, a series of monthly virtual events, where over 2,000 papers will be presented, giving the audience to interact with their respective authors and presenters. The highlight of WGC 2020+1 will be a three-day on-site/ hybrid conference in Harpa Conference Centre in Reykjavik, Iceland on 24-27 October 2021, this highlight event will be streamed on-line giving all those of our community that cannot still travel a chance to join the action.
What was planned as a geothermal week in Reykjavik in 2020 will in effect become a geothermal semester, stretching from the virtual opening on March 30 towards the end of October 2021.
The on-site in person event in Reykjavik will be the high point of WGC 2020+1. Turning a spotlight to all the highlights, industry leaders will convene in Harpa Conference Centre to discuss the most outstanding papers, the biggest challenges facing geothermal today and of course, how geothermal can improve its competitiveness and relevance, all the while contributing towards a sustainable and carbon neutral future of energy.

IGA´s global network of #geothermal leaders keeps on growing! We are delighted to welcome MOECO Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., Ltd. as our new corporate club member.
Founded by 17 companies under Mitsui group, MOECO is working to secure a long-term and stable supply of energy. Since its establishment, MOECO has been continually devoted to the exploration, development and production of energy resources globally.
In 2012, MOECO resolved to embark on the development of geothermal energy. As they seek to engage in developing geothermal as a renewable energy source, they are drawing on their long history of experience and knowledge gained from oil and natural gas development. They are now generating geothermal power electricity at Matsuo-Hachimantai, and conducting a cooperative resource survey aiming at commercialization of geothermal energy in differnet areas.

We are crowdsourcing the research and technical agenda needed for a successful pivot by oil and gas to geothermal.
The #GreenPipeline is an effort to identify and assemble a broad list of research and demonstration ideas to be undertaken if we are to get to the use of geothermal everywhere. The aim is to connect, inspire, catalogue, and make visible the technology synergies between the oil/gas and geothermal sectors, in order to inform funding authorities, research teams, and entrepreneurs of the range of technical research challenges facing geothermal adaptation.
This effort is focused on technology research. Although policy, price, permits and politics are instrumental in this transformation, those issues are not part of this enquiry. We want to hear your thoughts on the research and demonstration projects needed to move us towards geothermal everywhere.
Over the next few weeks, the IGA is actively soliciting input globally on unresolved topics. This is an open call; research groups, industry, and others are invited to participate. When we have completed the list of topics, we will collate and publish them in a dynamic format.

IGA Executive Director, Dr Marit Brommer, is honoured and thrilled to join the Steering Committee of IRENA Coalition for Action.
The IGA will give general guidance on the work and activities of the coalition members. For #geothermal there are two important groups under the Coalition: the Business and Investment Group and the Decarbonisation of End-Use Sectors. The target for this term is to significantly increase the contribution of the geothermal sector at large (finance, policies, technology). We count on our membership to join us in achieving these goals.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and 35 players in renewable energy from around the world jointly established a Coalition for Action to promote the wider and faster uptake of renewable energy technologies. The IRENA Coalition for Action forms a key international network to discuss industry trends, determine actions, share knowledge and exchange best practices with the vision to drive the global energy transition in line with the Sustainable Development Goal on energy.
