Stakeholder Meeting on the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA)

On 22 April 2015 a stakeholder meeting was held on the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) which is proposed by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The concept was first introduced at the IRENA Abu Dhabi Ascent meeting on May 2014 and subsequently in Iceland and New York.

IRENA representative Gurbuz Gonul presented the concepts and aims of the GGA. He informed that the Alliance aims to bring together stakeholders in geothermal development including governments, international financing institutions, private investors and other practitioners to cooperate in the geothermal energy development. Collaboration focus areas include: resource assessment; enabling frameworks for investment (including institutional setup and laws and regulations for resource development and exploitation); supportive policies to attract private investors; benchmarking of financing schemes; innovative financing and risk mitigation mechanisms; and capacity building. A total of 51 global geothermal stakeholders from various countries attended the meeting.
