Scaling-up Geothermal Direct Use for Industrial Applications in Latin America
The countries of Latin America are endowed with excellent geothermal resources. In Central America, these resources have been utilised mainly to generate electricity in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, there exists geothermal potential in Belize, Dominican Republic and Panama. In South America, geothermal resources are found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Chile has a utility-scale geothermal power plants, while Colombia has recently opened a small unit generating geothermal power for self-use.
In addition, geothermal energy can be used for multiple applications to support the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 7. For instance, the application of geothermal heat in the end-use sectors can favour the agri-food value sector, space heating and cooling in buildings, domestic hot water supply, among other industrial applications. These examples present an evident nexus between geothermal energy and the SDGs in areas such as food security and nutrition, climate action, sustainable cities and communities, among others.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through the Programme on Geothermal Heat Utilization for Industrial Processes in the SICA member countries (GEO II) co-organised a webinar on geothermal direct use in Latin America, with a focus on direct uses applications in the agri-food, industrial and urban sectors. The webinar will be held in Spanish.
