Geothermal Congress for Latin America & the Caribbean is two weeks away!

Webinar: Scaling-up Geothermal Direct Use for Industrial Applications in Latin America

The countries of Latin America are endowed with excellent geothermal resources. In Central America, these resources have been utilised mainly to generate electricity in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, there exists geothermal potential in Belize, Dominican Republic and Panama. In South America, geothermal resources are found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Chile has a utility-scale geothermal power plants, while Colombia has recently opened a small unit generating geothermal power for self-use.

In addition, geothermal energy can be used for multiple applications to support the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 7. For instance, the application of geothermal heat in the end-use sectors can favour the agri-food value sector, space heating and cooling in buildings, domestic hot water supply, among other industrial applications. These examples present an evident nexus between geothermal energy and the SDGs in areas such as food security and nutrition, climate action, sustainable cities and communities, among others.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through the Programme on Geothermal Heat Utilization for Industrial Processes in the SICA member countries (GEO II) co-organised a webinar on geothermal direct use in Latin America, with a focus on direct uses applications in the agri-food, industrial and urban sectors. The webinar will be held in Spanish.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 11 August at 19:00 GST (Abu Dhabi time).

2021Geothermal Rising Conference (GRC)

New IGA report published: Green Pipeline – The Oil and Gas to Geothermal Connection

Green Pipeline: The Oil and Gas to Geothermal Connection

The Green Pipeline is an effort to determine and contextualize the technical research and demonstration needs of the oil and gas sectors in pivoting to geothermal resources. There is a new awareness by the energy industry of the need to diversify their portfolio that was accelerated in the last 18 months from the impact of COVID-19 on world consumption changes as well as the arrival of broad political consensus to address climate change. As a result, in early 2021, a team of geothermal professionals developed and publicly distributed a survey instrument with an International Geothermal Association (IGA) supported team reviewing the results.

The survey responses highlighted well-known high-level challenges, yet few provided detailed research and demonstration challenges. The range in size and types of geothermal projects makes it difficult to say any one detail or technology will increase geothermal development.
Some examples of the high level challenges identified include:

  • Improved rate of penetration in harder and deeper rock, at higher temperatures, and wider bore diameters,
  • Derisking through improved exploration and regional 3D modelling,
  • Monitoring tools and wellbore production optimization,
  • Increase the rate of sustainable heat production per well,
  • Control fluid permeation through large volume of rock,
  • Increased heat conversion efficiency at lower delta T’s and lower flows,
  • Longer equipment lifetime in geothermal environments,
  • Reduction in induced seismicity and subsidence challenges,
  • Decreased O & M costs, lateral training of oil and gas professionals, and
  • Low-cost, efficient, standardized surface power plants for low-enthalpy resources.

Join the Pivot2021 – Geothermal Reimagined! (19-23 July 2021, online)

Pivot is a decade-long conference series focused on engaging oil and gas professionals in geothermal exploration and development. This year’s Pivot2021 – Geothermal Reimagined, to take place virtually July 19-23, will feature more than 165 speakers across 35 spirited sessions, with IGA members featured across a variety of sessions and topics. The agenda is exciting, with a diverse group of speakers across multiple disciplines and industries, and appearances by Sir Richard Branson, Chris Anderson and Daniel Yergin. This year, the IGA partnered with Pivot2021 to host a variety of sessions at Pivot2021, including sessions exploring offshore geothermal energy, geothermal in developing nations, and geothermal’s social license, to name a few. Pivot2021 is free to attend, but registration is required. The conference will be translated live into ten languages, and all are welcome to attend globally.

Micro Turbine Drilling

The exploration risk for geothermal wells is high, as the desired flow rates can often not be achieved due to insufficient permeability of the rocks in production horizons. Processes are already known from the oil and gas industry that can in principle be used to increase the permeability of a reservoir.

However, the conditions, which are typical for oil and gas reservoirs, cannot simply be transferred to geothermal reservoirs. These are often formations of hard rock where the water jet technology used in the RJD process has no or too low drilling performance.

In the Micro Turbine Drilling (MTD) project, a method is to be developed with which the permeability can be increased even in very hard production horizons of geothermal wells. The solution is based on the principle of RJD. Preliminary tests carried out with functional prototypes confirm the basic functionality and thus the great potential of the technology.
