Energy use is responsible for about one-third of greenhouse gases emitted by food systems. However, large disparities remain in the access to and use of sustainable, clean energy for agricultural activities across the world.

In the lead up to the UN Food Systems Summit and the High-Level Dialogue on Energy, accelerated action is needed to achieve sustainability and climate resilience for both food and energy systems.

In a joint statement issued today by the International Geothermal Association and over 45 leading renewable energy players under the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Coalition for Action, renewable energy and agriculture sectors were urged to break down silos and collaborate.

By jointly advancing the integration of renewables in the agriculture sector, stakeholders can make an essential contribution towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals and global climate objectives.

Geothermal energy can offer multiple solutions for agriculture and food sectors: heating for greenhouses and soil fertilization, food drying and sustainable aquaculture, spirulina and algae cultivation.

In its joint statement, the Coalition for Action puts forward the following five recommendations for governments, the renewable energy sector, and the agriculture sector to jointly consider:

  1. Cross-sectoral strategies to co-ordinate the planning and implementation of energy transition and food systems transformation.
  2. Multifaceted financing tools to improve access to capital for farmers, enterprises and end-users.
  3. Innovative, cross-sectoral business models that enable energy access and improved agricultural yields while protecting biodiversity, ecosystems and communities.
  4. Capacity-building initiatives to provide local actors with relevant skills, knowledge and resources to integrate renewable energy solutions in agriculture projects.
  5. Improved data on renewables applications in agriculture to de-risk projects, improve acceptability and effectively guide sustainable investments.

The Fort Nelson First Nation in British Columbia, Canada: the drilling of two full-size geothermal wells in the Clarke Lake field has now been completed.

Clarke Lake Geothermal Project also became “Tu Deh-Kah Geothermal”, which means “water steam”. An indigenous name is a step towards decolonizing the site’s identity and was chosen to represent the traditional Dene territory.

Tu Deh-Kah Geothermal is a state of the art project that will revolutionize the North by creating opportunities for generations to come. Fort Nelson First Nation is pursuing this sustainable energy project to create a vibrant future for our people and our neighbouring communities.

The geothermal data is quite fragmented not only within different international energy entities but also within the industry sector itself. This results in misrepresentation of the geothermal energy sector within international energy reports and contributes to confusion between geothermal industry players.

To address this challenge, since January 2021, the International Geothermal Association has started to build a framework on geothermal data collection methods and standards. This work is led by the IGA Education and Information Committee with the goal to support the process of collecting, storing, and sharing coherent geothermal data.

As an outcome, each group will deliver updated datasets for both power and heat to be used as standards for the IGA data collection. These standards will be used for customized questionnaires for the World Geothermal Congresses Country Updates and proposed for reference to other organizations.

The first round of revisions will be finalized prior the WGC 2020+1 in Reykjavik, Iceland and implemented fully by WGC2023 in Beijing, China.

The 5th edition of the Global Renewable Energy Forum (GREF) is organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Bonn Office in cooperation with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and REN21 – the Renewable Energy Network for the 21st Century.

GREF 2021 takes place as a hybrid conference on September 16, 2021, from 9:00-13:15 hrs (CEST).

More and more countries and companies commit to net zero-emission strategies, and roughly 73% of global CO2 emissions are subject to specific net-zero targets. Renewables continue to increase and reported a record year in 2020. Yet, to move toward a net zero-emission pathway, annual additions of wind and solar capacity must increase four-fold by 2030, making the 2020s a decisive decade. Limiting temperature increase to 1.5°C by mid-century requires an energy transition based on renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies.

Cities play a crucial role in achieving the energy transition not only in the power sector but also in end-use sectors lagging in the uptake of renewables that constitute serious obstacles to attaining net zero-emission targets. Particularly heating has not seen much addition of renewables in recent years.

Against this backdrop, GREF 2021 focuses on net zero-emission pathways of the public and private sectors and the role of cities in the energy transition, with a particular focus on buildings. It demonstrates ways to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and particularly focuses on how to implement ambitious 2030 targets.
